Scope of Work

Vanessa A. Vassall is the Maternal and Child Health Monitoring and Evaluation Intern. She works in USAID's Global Health Bureau (GH), in the Research and Policy Division (RP) of the Office of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN).


Vanessa Vassall is a fourth-year PhD candidate and McKnight Doctoral Fellow at Florida International University (FIU), where she studies health promotion and disease prevention as well as maternal and child health. Vanessa has the goal of becoming an expert in maternal and child health epidemiology, with a special focus on reducing maternal mortality. Vanessa is passionate about integrating health policy reform with social justice. Over the years, Vanessa has developed her knowledge and skills by participating in fellowships at such agencies as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Department of Health & Human Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the National Association of County and City Health Officials, and the National Institutes of Health, and by completing internships at health departments in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and Vermont. Vanessa’s dedication to the field of maternal and child health motivated her to gain global health experience by teaching infection control and leadership to community nurses and midwives in Sierra Leone with Professors Without Borders. At FIU, Vanessa has served as an officer for the student organizations Leaders in Maternal and Child Health and Black Graduate Women's Association. A proud graduate of the University of Washington and Meharry Medical College, Vanessa is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist, Lead Exposure Prevention Ambassador with Black Millennials for Flint, American Public Health Association Maternal and Child Health Student Fellow, and a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
