Birru Shigut Gondol earned a bachelor's degree in Public Health and master’s degree (Hons) in General Public Health from the Haramaya University of Ethiopia. He is an innovative and insightful expert in public health with over 19 years of experiences as public health practitioner particularly in the field of TB and TB/HIV Programming, Birru worked for both Malawi and Ethiopia Ministry of Health at capacity of senior technical advisor to the National TB Control Program specifically in the area of  Global fund and Drug Resistance TB which includes development of Funding Requests/Concept Notes, support in effective grant negotiations, implementation and reprogramming, budget revision and monitoring, development of  periodic Progress Update and Disbursement Request, Drug resistance TB and health system strengthening for more than eleven years. He contributed for remarkable achievement gained by the National TB Control programs in key TB coverage and outcome indicators, capacity to effectively and efficiently managing the Global Fund grants and implementation of activities as outlined in the National TB Strategic Plan. Working for government as senior technical advisor gave Birru additional opportunities for learning and gaining skills in public health program management in a complex health system and challenging environment.

Birru also had an opportunity to work for USAID funded HEAL TB project in Ethiopia as project coordinator in which he successfully managed and supervised more than 25 technical staff, supported the project start up process, led the development of project M&E tools and implementation of the project activities. Under this project, he supported the Government in implementation and scale up of key TB interventions including the Public Private Mix for TB, community TB care, collaborative TB/HIV activities, Muti-Drug Resistant TB initiatives in more than 300 districts and 1300 health facilities. Throughout his career, Birru gained huge experiences in TB programming, supply chain management, monitoring and evaluation of health program, designing cost effective interventions, engagement of private care providers and community in TB care and prevention.
