Fellowships and Internships

STAR provides a unique opportunity for individuals to gain skills and experience in global health through fellowship and internship placements in a variety of settings. Through fellowship and internship placements professionals will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in global health

STAR fellowships and internships are paid positions with a focus on building the capacity of individuals and organizations. STAR participants receive support to grow professionally while contributing practically to the activities of their host organization.

  • Enhance knowledge and skills through individualized learning

STAR participants benefit from STARs dedicated team of Learning and Performance Management specialists who provide participants with individualized training plans intended to develop core competencies in global health, technical skills and achieve professional GOALS. Using a learner-centered approach the STAR team strives to ensure that learning activities are cohesive, purposeful, and relevant to the participant’s scope of work and their long-term aspirations in global health.

  • Build a powerful global network

STAR is creating a lasting and collaborative cadre of multidisciplinary, multinational, and multicultural global health professionals. Participants will establish contacts and relationships at their host organizations, and with their peers through networking and knowledge-sharing activities.

General Questions

What are the qualifications to become a STAR fellow or intern?

STAR fellows are varied in their levels of experience, areas of expertise and backgrounds. Fellows can be early in their careers or seasoned technical experts, while interns may be enrolled or recently graduated from a degree program. Each fellowship and internship will have specific qualifications including years of experience, skills and degree requirements.

What do Fellows and Interns do?

Each position scope is tailored to the needs of the host organization. Day-to-day, Fellows and Interns contribute to the work of their host organizations through capacity-building activities, such as strategic planning, program scale-up and design, strategic partnership management, and transferring specialized technical skills and knowledge. STAR participants are also expected to focus 10 percent of their time dedicated to learning activities to address their individual professional development goals.

Where do they work?

Host organizations may include academic institutions, ministries of health, nongovernmental and civil society organizations, and USAID Washington and Missions. Positions can either be based in the U.S. or overseas.

What types of positions are available?

It depends. Fellowships and internships are generally full-time paid positions that are developed in collaboration with the host organization and are based on their needs. Most positions require specific technical skills or knowledge (ex: data analysis, monitoring and evaluation, program management etc.) and focus on a specific area of global health programming (ex: HIV, Maternal Child and Health, Tuberculosis, etc.).. Recent Fellowship opportunities have included:

  • Data Science and Visualization Advisor
  • Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor for Maternal, Child Health and Nutrition

What is the duration of positions?

Fellowships are two years; Internships range from three months to one year.

Qualifications and Eligibility

Do I need to be currently enrolled in a degree program to be eligible?

No, you do not have to be enrolled in a degree program to be eligible for Fellowships. However, you can be concurrently enrolled in a degree program for the Internship positions.

Do I have to be a U.S. citizen?

No, however, some positions based at USAID may require that candidates have U.S. citizenship/permanent residency due to security clearance requirements. Specific eligibility requirements will be noted in the position announcements.

Application Process

How do I apply for a STAR position?

Candidates will submit online applications to specific job announcements. Applicants will be selected based on the required job specifications.

When is the application deadline?

Can I apply for multiple positions?

Yes. We encourage candidates to submit a separate resume and cover letter tailored to each position. Demonstrate how you can add value to each position for which you’re applying.

Candidates should thoroughly review the specific eligibility requirements for each position. To enhance your likelihood of being selected, be careful to not apply to jobs where you do not meet hard requirements that are typically not negotiable, like citizenship/permanent residency or language fluency.

Learning and Professional Development

What professional development benefits do Fellows and Interns receive?

STAR participants will receive an individual learning budget that supports individual participation in professional development activities including conferences, workshops, courses, and coaching. Throughout their experience, each participant is guided by STAR’s Learning team. The Learning team will partner with them to design an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that’s cohesive, purposeful, and relevant to the participant’s scope of work and long-term career objectives. STAR’s Learning team also supports participants in knowledge sharing and capacity building activities.

How much time do participants devote to learning?

Participants are expected to dedicate 10% effort to learning activities, which equates to approximately four hours per week on average for full-time positions.

What types of mentorship opportunities are available?

STAR uses a group mentorship curriculum that focuses on helping participants combine their on-the-job and other learning experiences to grow their knowledge, skills, and attitudes and improve their competence in global health technical areas. Mentorship groups will consist of a facilitator and 4-6 STAR participants focused on similar technical areas and/or at a similar career stage.
